Choosing The Right Top 10 Mens Cologne For You

Many of us like to wear what is currently popular, but choosing the right top 10 mens cologne can be difficult. It pays to do some research first to decide which one will be most suitable, both for taste and lifestyle.

Choosing a cologne can be a very complicated process. Should one be influenced by the current advertisements in magazines or on television? Or just go to the fragrance section of a department store and browse until something seems to resonate? Or take the advice of friends?

There is general agreement that the situation or occasion will at least to some extent be important in deciding what type of cologne to wear. The scent you might wear to the office may not be appropriate to wear to a sports event on the weekend. Then again, a romantic date or evening out on the town seems to call for a different fragrance than professional or casual situations do.

On the other hand, there are certainly no hard and fast rules. Some people decide on a scent that they absolutely love, and they wear it everywhere, every day. Still, it is good to know about different fragrance types, classifications, and other factors so that one may make an informed choice.

Another consideration when choosing a scent, rated in the top 10 mens cologne, is what its fragrance notes are. The components of a scent are broken down by top notes, middle notes, and base notes. Top notes are the first ones perceived when we encounter a new fragrance, and they dissipate fairly quickly. The middle notes linger for a longer time, finally giving way to the base notes which are the longest lasting. So, of course, it is difficult to completely experience a scent in just a few seconds at the perfume counter. If possible, obtain a small sample vial of cologne so you can wear the scent all day and decide if you like it enough to invest in a larger size.

Another reason to start with a sample is because individual body chemistry will influence how a given fragrance will smell. There will be at least subtle differences in the scent from one person to another. So wearing the cologne for several hours is necessary to determine the effect of that chemistry on the scent. This will also allow time for feedback from friends, wives or girlfriends, and coworkers on how pleasant your new scent is.

Colognes are also characterized by the scent family to which they belong. These classifications are somewhat changeable and overlapping, and they have evolved over time. Most modern men's scents generally fall into the families of citrus, oriental, woods, green, aquatic and leather. Citrus, green, and aquatic type scents are usually perceived as lighter, and therefore would be appropriate for office and casual wear. Oriental, woods, and leather kinds of colognes might lend themselves more to evening and romantic wear. This will apply to the top 10 mens cologne as well.

Colognes are also broken down by their ability to last. Some will seem to dissipate within a relatively short period. Others will linger and last a long time. This is related to the fragrance notes, in that the longer lasting scents will have more pronounced middle and base notes than the scents which fade quickly.

The lasting quality of a given scent will also depend, of course, on how heavily it is applied. Lighter scents will still wear off more quickly, and may need to be reapplied during the day or evening, depending on the occasion. Obviously, when first wearing a new cologne it is better to start with a lighter application until you are used to it, so as not to be overwhelming.

Among the top 10 mens cologne, many are classified as being in the citrus category. Perhaps this is reflective of a generally more casual lifestyle, as this lighter type of scent is acceptable for many different occasions. The oriental category, which is also called spicy, is also well represented. Your personal scent statement may include colognes from one or both of these types.

Perhaps another and entirely individual consideration when selecting a scent is longevity, not of the fragrance but of the brand. Some colognes have endured the test of time and remain popular year after year. Others do not remain in the forefront of taste that long. With the very recent additions, of course, this remains to be seen. It becomes a choice between the classic and the modern, which are neither good nor bad, but just different. Age and lifestyle may play a role in this choice, but certainly there are no set rules. The top 10 mens cologne that is best for you can only be determined by you.
